About Karen Freeman

Karen Freeman, MS, RD, CSSD is a dynamic and experienced nutrition consultant in private practice in San Diego specializing in sports nutrition, weight management, cholesterol-lowering diets and eating disorders for children and adults. Karen’s unique integrative approach combines scientific, medical, behavioral and psychological components to address your needs and ensure your success in meeting your goals. Karen understands the nuances of context and variety of influences that comprise an individual’s unique nutritional landscape so that she can “meet you where you are” and help you do what it takes to ensure your success! She is especially adept at helping people integrate information they already have, supplementing it as needed and helping them put it together so it makes sense for their life.

Karen is a registered dietitian (RD) and certified specialist in sports dietetics (CSSD) through the American Dietetic Association (ADA). She is a clinical instructor at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine in La Jolla, where she teaches sports nutrition to exercise and sports medicine fellows and residents. As a consultant to the San Diego Chargers, the New York Rangers, the Los Angeles Raiders, San Diego Spirit Woman’s soccer team, the San Diego Padres, the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOC) in San Diego, and University of San Diego college athletes, Karen is aware of the special needs of professional and recreational athletes.

In addition to her consulting, Karen has been a guest lecturer throughout the nation including at Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Karen FreemanArizona, New Mexico, Indianapolis, and the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.

Karen has a Master’s of Science in Nutrition Public Health from Columbia University and a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics from the State University College of New York at Buffalo. She is a member of Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN) and Nutrition in Complementary Care, dietetic practice groups of the ADA, and California and San Diego Dietetic Associations.

In her spare time, Karen has run several New York City marathons, is an avid yoga enthusiast and has received over 100 hours of teacher certification in Ashtanga Yoga.
